This tool allows the user to create a specified distance buffer around a selected item or items. This buffer is then Visual drawn on the map. The user can also use this tool to select objects from a specified layer that are within the specified distance and list them in a table. 1. Select the active layer of an object that you wish to select. Use the Rectangle Select tool to select the Object. (You can also use the Query or Find Tool also.) 2. Left Click on the buffer tool. 3. In the box below the map is information to fill out regarding the buffer command. First choose a layer that you are interested in finding out if there are any objects from that layer within the buffer you are building. If you are interested in just drawing a visual buffer than you can select No Layer. 4. Now type in a number for the distance of the buffer you wish to create. The Window will indicate the current units of measurement. These units can be changed using the Set Units Button. 5. If you have selected a layer and wish to see the results of any objects within your buffer then check the display attributes. This will show a table of all results. Example: You want to find any archaeology sites within a distance of 0.10 miles of your address. First make sure your units are set to miles.(Use the Set Units Tool). Now Select your Address using the Rectangle select or Query or Find Tool. For this example select 18 WEST STREET. Once this parcel is selected click on the Buffer Tool. In the Layer Drop Down Select Archaeology Sites. In the Distance Window type 0.10 Your Units should be Miles. Click the Display Attributes Field. Now Click on the Create Buffer Tool. You Should Get a Table listing 8 Sites which you should also see within the Gray Buffer drawn on the Map.
